Education Needed to be a Freelance Graphic Designer

Education Needed to be a Freelance Graphic Designer

Education is key to making progress in any job field. Even the most simple job needs instruction and direction to understand how to handle it. As a graphic designer I needed proper training and understanding of my field and of the business world to succeed.

I took business courses at university and earned a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design to jump start my graphic design career. You can also get an Associate’s degree with a focus on graphic design or fine arts or a Bachelor’s degree in fine arts if you are interested in pursuing a career in graphic design. Some people even got the extra mile with a PhD in graphic design, but frankly that seems to be excessive to me and not practical. Most employers are happy enough if you earn a Bachelor’s and many are also content with an Associate’s degree. I suppose I find the PhD kind of excessive because clients should have to pay you more since you have higher education, yet a lot of clients or employers won’t want to hire you because they will have to pay you more. Unless you are willing to take a cut in pay of what your mind is worth from it’s education standards.

The second most important part of education and preparation for your career in graphic design, is to put together a portfolio. Portfolios are necessary if you want to succeed and draw in customers. You should start putting gone together while you are still at university working on your degree. That way you can jump right into the job market. Graphic designers portfolios can come in all forms, so don’t be afraid to think outside of the box so you will stand out from the crowd. Your portfolio can be printed portfolios in a book format or you can put together a portfolio on a website, a cd or a  DVD. I myself have both a book format portfolio with my best work, a mini portfolio available on my website and a DVD format to showcase my talent with moving graphic design.

What I Do As a Freelance Graphic Designer

What I Do As a Freelance Graphic Designer

I get asked the question about what freelance graphic designers do fairly regularly. Even my own mum complains that I don’t have a real job like being a lawyer or a doctor, and even when I patiently explain that being a freelance graphic designer or a graphic designer is a real job she will humorously say: “Well you could have had a real job like being a doctor like your father or you could have been a lawyer like your cousin!”. Burn. My mum is definitely a character who enjoys “torturing” me, although it is in good sport. Still, despite what my mum thinks and what some random people I come across sometimes think, freelance graphic designer is a real profession and it is a profession I enjoy greatly.

Being a graphic designer means you create imagery, text or moving graphics that can be used for many things. Media, advertising and printed things are typically the kind of things that us graphic designers handle. I am well versed with using graphic design software like Corel Draw Graphics Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud, as well as with Adobe Photoshop. I work with a lot of clients and do multiple jobs sometimes at the same time, so it is necessary for me to be well-organized and efficient at getting work done on time. Problem-solving and art skills are also required with working with graphic design. You have to realize what speaks well to people and what doesn’t really strike a cord with people who look at the graphics your design. Artistic skill is important because you need to know how to create visually appealing and balanced designs that draw in the eyes so people check out what the design is saying or what it looks like.

Hey, I’m Freelance Graphic Designer Extraordinaire Max Komazi

Hey, I’m Freelance Graphic Designer Extraordinaire Max Komazi

To those new to this blog: greetings! My name is Max Komazi. I reside and am from the United Kingdom. Specifically I am proudly from the London, England.  I love much of the culture in England. I am an avid football fan and sometimes play with some buddies out in the park. I am especially excited to see the upcoming Rio Olympics for the football events and some of the other events as well. The swimming events are sometimes exciting. I like much of the literature in my native United Kingdom as well. The Harry Potter series a favorite of mine, even if it is laughable that a man might like them. I still do however. J.K. Rowling wrote them in such a way that they are like thriller books that keep making you turn the page to see what happens next. Harry Potter is enjoyable as a character too. I really like the drama of Hamlet, but I am a little sick of the rest of William Shakespeare’s plays since I had to read much of his work when I was in school.

My family were immigrants from Iran, so I am of Iranian heritage. I particularly love the cuisine of my Iranian heritage. When we have family gatherings we always dine on kebabs, Persian style salad chock full of avocados and tomatoes, Persian sabzi polo (herbal rice and fava beans) and Yazdi sweet cakes. Yum, just picturing all that food makes my mouth water.

I make my living as a freelance graphic designer. Primarily I do freelance graphic design work for the online gambling industry. It’s often that I have to work closely with freelance game developers and web developers when I am working on graphic design within the online gambling industry. My follow up blogs will go more in depth with my work as a freelance graphic designer if you are interested in learning more about the profession.
